This was supposed to be a mid-week round-up. A post somewhere around the stage three or four hump. But that is how the Epic goes – you go into such a bubble of riding and recovery and riding and recovery that nothing else really matters.
Anyway here (better late than never, as they say) is an update before we head into the weekend. Have been an absolute blast. The first three stages were kind of reminiscent of classic ‘old’ Epic stages, with long district road drags (not that I know what the old stages felt like). But then Thursday’s stage four was brutal. A real monster!
We rode some awesome trails but all littered with fist-sized rocks. It was crazy. The climbs too were gnarly, and the sand in the beginning – they made us work for our kilometres. Coming over Bain’s Kloof was also just such a highlight.
But we got through that and are feeling pretty good. The pattern our our stages is usually a strong start. Then maintenance through the middle and then Craig’s legs come firing in the last forty so that we finish strong…
Yesterday’s time trial may have been ‘short’ but was by no means easy though. All the ‘up’ was super challenging but we didn’t lose too much time and looking forward to the next two days.
The support for our CANSA initiative and the awareness out there has been really heart warming and we are super appreciative of the support.
